Meet “Springer”: The Rider Who Made the Harley-Davidson XR-750 Famous

Before Scott Parker became the name in flat track, there was Jay Springsteen. The Michigan rider joined the Harley-Davidson factory team at 18 and won AMA Rookie of the Year in 1975. The next year he won the first of three straight AMA Grand National Championships, in 1976, 1977, and 1978. He did it on the Harley-Davidson XR-750, the dirt track bike that came to define the sport.
Springsteen’s record still stands out. He won 43 national races, and in 1982 he became the first rider to reach 30 wins. When he retired in 2003, he had started a record 398 AMA nationals. A 1994 AMA industry poll named him the greatest dirt track rider of all time, and he went into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2003. In 1981 he and Parker became Harley-Davidson teammates, a pairing fans still talk about.
Flat track is where Harley-Davidson built its racing name, and riders like Springsteen are why. Collectors who love the sport, and the bikes behind it, will find plenty to look at in Live the Legacy: Pat Bush Doc’s Harley-Davidson Private Collection, coming soon from GRS Auctions.
